Aberdeenshire Provost - Councillor William Howatson
The Provost is the civic head for Aberdeenshire and attends a range of events, occasions and openings on behalf of the council.
Councillor William Howatson has served as Aberdeenshire’s Provost since May 2007.
Following his election to the council in 1999, Cllr Howatson was elected chairman of the Kincardine and Mearns Area Committee in 2003, a role he held until April 2007 when the council dissolved for local elections.
Following the elections, Cllr Howatson was elected by a majority vote at full council to the position of Provost.
In his role as Provost, Cllr Howatson promotes Aberdeenshire and represents the area throughout the United Kingdom and overseas.
Among his many roles the Provost also chairs meetings of the full council which convene at Woodhill House in Aberdeen every six weeks in the council calendar.
The Provost, who is a prominent local figure and former journalist, also chairs the North East Scotland Fisheries Development Partnership and the North East Scotland Agriculture Advisory Group.
Other appointments for the Provost include:
- Membership of the NHS Grampian Board and Chair Audit Committee
- Chairman of Aberdeen City Community Health Partnership
- Independent Member Scottish Agricultural Wages Board
- Assessor to the Court of the University of Aberdeen

The Provost is keen to hear about your projects and activities across Aberdeenshire and welcomes invitations to attend local and regional events.
He is particularly keen to promote Aberdeenshire to a range of audiences and therefore is keen to hear about projects which would benefit from this kind of support.
