Reporting Your Finds
What do you have sitting on your mantelpiece in your house, up in the attic or down in the garden shed? Archaeology is not confined to the big monuments that cover the North East of Scotland.
While monuments make up the background story of the history of the area it is the individual artefacts that can add the personal touch. While we do not condone people going out and actively digging for archaeological remains, some finds are made simply while working in the garden or were found generations ago when the importance of knowing the context of an object was not understood.

We would be very interested in hearing from you about any finds that you may have at home. They can be anything from worked flints to coins to carved stone balls. If you do have an artefact that you would like to report to us then please contact us.
Format for Reporting Finds
- If known provide at least a 6 figure National Grid Reference (8 figures would be even better) locating where the find was made, e.g. NJ 1234 5678
- Give a short description of how the object was found
- Give a short description of what the find is, or if in doubt what it looks like. Remember to note the material it is made from, e.g. stone or flint
- If possible include a photograph of the object (if digital then in jpeg or tiff format please)
We are not wanting to take these finds away from you, all we are wanting is to give you the opportunity of reporting ancient artefacts found by yourselves which can help in the understanding of our history in the North East of Scotland. So go and have a rummage in your house!
