The Picts
The Picts are best represented in Dark Age Scotland by their characteristic art, expressed in powerful animal and geometric symbols carved on large stones, cave walls, metalwork and bones and pebbles.
Carved Stone Ball
An important, if enigmatic, type of ceremonial object which was well represented in the North-east around 2500 BC, is the carved stone ball.
Vitrified Forts
These Vitrified Forts represent only one of several types of defensive site in the north-east, dating from c 900BC to c AD 900. They are called 'vitrified' because the stones of their rampart walls have been fused together by intense heat.
Recumbent Stone Circles
The Recumbent Stone Circle (RSC) is Aberdeenshire's unique contribution to the tradition of erecting rings of standing stones which was current in certain parts of Britain and Ireland during the third and second millennia BC.
Flint Mines
Traces of the exploitation of flint by prehistoric peoples dating back 3,000 BC as found in these flint mines
