Footprints in sandShort breaks or respite care services are designed to give users of community care services and their carers a break from their usual routine or caring role.

This service can take the form of a few hours provided at home or at a day centre to give the carer a break, or a few days away from home for the community care service user usually in a care home or respite unit. There is also the option to choose an alternative type of service if these are not suitable.

Who can have a short break or respite care?

Individuals who receive community care services, including older people, adults with physical or learning disabilities and adults with mental health issues can access short breaks or respite services.

What is the Short Breaks Bureau?

Short Breaks Bureau LogoThe Short Breaks Bureau helps you find the most suitable short break.

The service aims to make sure that you can access information about a range of short break options, including the kind of accommodation that you need and the care and support that you will require during your break. It is run by Aberdeenshire Council.

You need to have a single shared assessment or carers' assessment to access short break services. After the assessment your details, including an agreement on the amount of short breaks that you have been assessed for, will be passed to the Short Breaks Bureau Co-ordinator. They will help you to arrange a break away from home.
