Care homes
Care homes for adults aged 65 and over
A care home offers an alternative to your current living arrangements, if the type of care and support you need cannot be provided at home.
As of April 2002, there is no legal difference between residential homes and nursing homes. This means that all care homes have to be more flexible about the services they offer. They will be able to meet all aspects of the care and support you require, including:
- a room of your own
- all meals, snacks and refreshments
- care and support staff 24 hours a day
- help with personal care and everyday activities
- help with continuing your social and leisure pursuits and / or developing new interests
- specialised nursing care
Care management
Care managers will assess you to decide what level of care you need. This is done with yourself and your carer.
The aim is to enable people to live as normal a life as possible:
- at home
- or in a homely environment in the local community.
The right amount of care and support will be provided so that you can be as independent as possible.
If you think you may need to move into a care home, you should contact your local social work office.

Independent sector
Your care manager can also commission care from an independent provider of care. The home will need to be registered with the Social Care and Social Work Improvement Scotland. This option will be discussed with you, and your carer, at your assessment.
Grampian CareData can provide a list of independent care homes in your area.
