Providing clients in Aberdeenshire with efficient, high quality buildings within strict cost and time limits can be an extremely challenging role, however, watching your ideas become a reality is one of the satisfying and rewarding aspects of choosing a career in Architecture.

As an architect or architectural technologist working for Aberdeenshire Council, you would be involved in all aspects of building projects. From the initial briefing, through the design process, obtaining all consents and administration of construction contracts to the completion and occupation of new and refurbished buildings.

Our Architects should have an interest in all types of building and construction work and they will develop a wide range of skills to enable them to undertake projects successfully.

What qualifications and experience
do you need?

As a school leaver with 4 Standard/Credit Grades you could start your career with the property service as a trainee architectural technician. Through a programme of day release study you could gain HNC qualification in Construction Practice.

On completion of the HNC there is the possibility to progress into an Architectural Technologist position. Initially under supervision you would then be allowed to undertake more complex and demanding challenges as your experience widens.

Also HNC gained may gain you entry to an Undergraduate degree in Architectural Technology. From 2008/09 The Robert Gordon University is offering this course to students on a part time basis, where they integrate with full time students.

With 4 Higher Grades you could attend a full time course in Architectural Technology or Architecture. An Honours Degree in
Technology or a Masters in Architecture would allow you to join our service as an Architectural Technologist or a Trainee Architect. There would be further training within the office to allow you to gain full professional qualification and chartered status.

Sandwich Year Students

Where budgets permit, we employ sandwich year students to help them gain relevant experience. The year out is a compulsory part of the graduate or diploma programme and the training institutions are always pleased to find employers who are able to offer placements. Students are allocated a counsellor from one of our rofessional staff and this person oversees the student training programme.

Future Career Opportunities

Aberdeenshire Council is always keen to be involved in training its own staff, and you would have the opportunity to benefit from many in-house courses which would help develop your skills and enhance your professional standing. However, financial assistance is sometimes available to allow staff to undertake external courses of study.
