Training for Foster Carers
Training is vital in enabling foster carers to develop the knowledge and skills required in providing a good standard of care for our looked after children.
Our fostering service values the work foster carers undertake.
In return we provide quality support and training to ensure successful outcomes for children, and an enjoyable experience for carers.
Fostering is a rewarding and challenging role which requires many aspects of care. By completing training and achieving goals it can help build your confidence and ensure that you have the knowledge and skills to make a positive difference to the children and young people in your care.
The Skills to Foster
All new applicants are required to attend The Skills to Foster (pdf 48kb) training course and, as a newly approved foster carer, you will undertake the Induction to Fostering Program.
Aberdeenshire Fostering Service Plan
As a new foster carer you will be placed on level one of the Aberdeenshire Fostering Service Plan (pdf 36kb) which has four levels based on a set of competencies and training.
As you gain more experience, attend more training and demonstrate the appropriate skills you will be given the opportunity to progress through the various skills levels.

The skills level you are on determines the annual skills payment you will receive for being a foster carer.
Newly approved foster carers always start on level one and will remain at level one for a minimum of two years.
