Children and young people have rights laid down by international and Scottish law, and by government policy. These include:

• The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child

• The Children (Scotland) Act 1995

• The Standards in Scotland's Schools etc Act 2000, which gives young people important rights in education

• The Human Rights Act 1998
