Community Based Family History Classes

Some centres will at different times of the year fun Family History classes. You will need to check with your nearest community centre or library to find out if one is running in your area. Aberdeenshire Council has various sources of information based at different locations throughout Aberdeenshire which can help you in your research. These can be found on the main Aberdeenshire Council website.

One of the most important things to remember is that when you begin this journey of seeking out those who went before you, that the people you came from lived, loved, married had children, worked and died.

When researching your own history please remember to be sensitive to some of the possible surprises that you may come across. For instance it may surprise you find that when looking through birth records that many births are marked as ‘illegitimate’ although the father may have signed the birth certificate, this is because it was often expensive to marry.
