Family Learning
Family Learning is learning within the family and is usually more lasting and influential than any other. Family life provides a foundation for all learning.
Throughout Aberdeenshire there are lots of courses that can provide parents with the necessary skills and confidence to participate in different learning settings with their children. Parents who have taken part in some of these courses say that they are better able to interact positively with their children and support them in their learning. Examples would include family literacy, language and numeracy programmes, and confidence building. Various benefits are reported by parents including having a different view, better communication with children, not losing their temper or “getting wound up.”
One parent in a school who had improved her own skills and now acts as a volunteer described the family learning programmes as throwing a “pebble into a pond” with the ripples of learning and increased confidence spreading out into the local community.
Parent and Toddler groups and Parent and Baby groups are a good starting point for Family Learning.
