Playgroups
A playgroup provides play and learning for children aged 2 ½ and 5 years. After their 3rd birthday children will have free places. Prior to 3 years old there may be charges. Groups can offer morning or afternoon sessions each week, usually in term-time only, on a part-time basis. Children usually stay in Playgroup for 1 to 2 years before moving on to nursery or primary schools.
They may be run by a committee of parents and staffed by a qualified or experience supervisor with assistant(s), with parents helping on a voluntary rota basis. All staff and regular rota parents will have security checks carried out through Disclosure Scotland.
Playgroups provide children with activities such as, art, craft and construction, sand and water play, adventure play, music and movement, books and stories etc., as well as the opportunity to socialize with other children. They provide a stable, secure and relaxed environment where their learning and development skills can flourish. Parents and carers have the chance to share the responsibility for their own and other children in the group, to watch and learn from them, and to support each other.
