Voluntary Organisations

There are around 45,000 voluntary organisations in Scotland, most of which emerged to tackle issues in society which were not being dealt with by the statutory or private sectors.

Tasks faced by voluntary organisations can be challenging and voluntary organisations need to be strong, clear, flexible and secure in order to be effective in the modern day world. Many small organisations such as playgroups employ a handful of staff whereas large organisations like Barnardo’s have a large wide-ranging task force.   To be effective good planning and good management is essential.

Involvement in a voluntary organisation can be very rewarding for those who like to have control over their destiny.   Volunteers involved in small organisations can really feel that they are a part of that organisation.

Voluntary organisations often need and give support. There are specific organisations such as the Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) and Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) created to support the needs of other community and voluntary organisations.

Community Learning and Development works in partnership with the CVS and SCVO to develop strong and sustainable community groups.

The kind of support available would include club structures, finance, publicity, marketing, staffing and committee work.
