Skate parks
There are a number of skate parks in Aberdeenshire of varying degrees of size and difficulty. Many of which have been built as a result of young people and the local communities working together. Skate parks provide a place for young people who may not be attracted to team sports a place to go and express themselves as an individual and athlete.
Skating is a very physical sport, which tests the endurance, sharpens the reflexes and develops the creativity of the skaters. Skate parks are far safer than young people rolling through busy streets and if the parks are built right – with local skater input and involvement then those young people also develop a sense of ownership. It can also demonstrate to young people that patience and persistence often pays off.
A few guidelines to consider when determining where a skate park should go:
- Most skaters don’t drive, so a skate park should be in a central location which is easily accessible by public transportation.
- Skate parks should be located near the street, not tucked away at the back of a larger park area. Hidden locations attract elements other than skaters which can lead to problems the skaters don’t create.
- Existing public park areas are ideal locations to add a skate park.
