Elections: Current Consultations

First Periodical Review of Scottish Parliamentary Constituencies

In accordance with the Scottish Parliament (Constituencies) Act 2004, the Boundary Commission for Scotland is conducting its First Periodical Review of Scottish Parliament boundaries.

On 14 February 2008, the Commission published its provisional proposals for the Scottish Parliament and a consultation period followed, with responses sought by 14 March 2008.

The Commission's proposals would impact on voters in the Aberdeenshire Council area as substantial parts of the current Scottish Parliamentary constituencies would fall into new constituencies, several of which overlap with other local authorities. Aberdeenshire would, in the main, retain three county constituencies, but the change of boundaries would mean parts of the Aberdeenshire fall into two further constituencies, shared with Angus Council and Aberdeen City Council. .

A report was submitted to Aberdeenshire Council on 6 March 2008, suggesting an alternative arrangement. A copy of the report can be viewed through the following link

Members, however, wished instead to note the Commissioner's original proposals, agreed to a submission containing a number of points of principle and requested a public local inquiry.

In July, the Commission announced that a public local inquiry into arrangements for north-east constituencies would be held in the Town House, Aberdeen, on 27 and 28 October, 2008 before Sheriff Principal Young. The findings of the inquiry are now awaited.
