Heating Appliances
These are:
- Solid fuel open fire
- Solid fuel closed fire
- Electric radiant fire
- Electric convector heater
- Electric oil-filled radiator
- Gas radiant fire
- Gas wall convector heater
- Bottled gas heater
- Paraffin heater
The choice of heating appliance will affect:
- one's space heating efficiency levels
- the amount of moisture produced
- the running costs involved

Heating Systems
For Wet Systems:
- Gas central heating
- Oil fired central heating
- LPG central heating system
- Solid fuel central heating
Wet System Control
For Dry Systems:
- Electric storage heaters
- Electric under floor heating
- Electric ceiling heating
- Gas warm air heating system
- Electric warm air heating system
Dry System Control
The difference mainly found between wet and dry systems is that whereas Wet Systems use heated water to transfer heat to all parts of the building, Dry Systems use heated air.
The choice of heating system will affect space heating efficiency levels, the amount of moisture produced and the running costs involved.
In regards to choice, it is worthwhile considering that there are many areas within Scotland where the choice of heating system is very restricted due to the lack of gas and oil supplies and/or deliveries. This is particularly the case in the North of Scotland and in many rural areas.
