Heating Appliances

These are:

  • Solid fuel open fire
  • Solid fuel closed fire
  • Electric radiant fire
  • Electric convector heater
  • Electric oil-filled radiator
  • Gas radiant fire
  • Gas wall convector heater
  • Bottled gas heater
  • Paraffin heater

The choice of heating appliance will affect:

  • one's space heating efficiency levels
  • the amount of moisture produced
  • the running costs involved

Heating Systems

For Wet Systems:

  • Gas central heating
  • Oil fired central heating
  • LPG central heating system
  • Solid fuel central heating
    Wet System Control

For Dry Systems:

  • Electric storage heaters
  • Electric under floor heating
  • Electric ceiling heating
  • Gas warm air heating system
  • Electric warm air heating system
    Dry System Control

The difference mainly found between wet and dry systems is that whereas Wet Systems use heated water to transfer heat to all parts of the building, Dry Systems use heated air.

The choice of heating system will affect space heating efficiency levels, the amount of moisture produced and the running costs involved.

In regards to choice, it is worthwhile considering that there are many areas within Scotland where the choice of heating system is very restricted due to the lack of gas and oil supplies and/or deliveries. This is particularly the case in the North of Scotland and in many rural areas.

Space Heating Efficiency (%) Running Costs Moisture Production
Solid Fuel Central Heating System [open fire – coal] Medium – 60% Low / Medium Low
Solid Fuel Central Heating System [closed fire – anthracite] Good – 70% Low / Medium Low
Electric Storage heaters Good – 90% Medium Low
Gas Central Heating System Good – 70% Low Medium
Oil Central Heating System Good – 70% Medium Low
LPG Central Heating System
Good – 70%
Medium / High Medium

Please note that where a condensing boiler is part of the central heating system, the space heating efficiency is increased by around an additional 15%.
