Project Scotland - Volunteering Opportunities for Young People In Aberdeenshire

ProjectScotland is Scotland's national youth volunteering organisation, and we have created some great opportunities for young people in Aberdeenshire to develop their skills and confidence through volunteering. These are full time, structured, developmental volunteering opportunities created especially for young people aged 16-25.

The Aberdeenshire project will involve up to 20 young people and last for between three and six month, with volunteers committing to around 30 hours per week. Theres loads to choose from - indoors (the arts, marketing, youth work) or outdoors (environmental, gardening) We'll match applicants with the right opportunity to suit their interest and skills, and we'll support them with an independent mentor, who is also a volunteer, throughout the project. We'll even help with travelling expenses.

Dance Residency Showing: Smallpetitklein

After a week's residency at the Barn, working on the new dance piece CUT, Smallpetitklein invite you to come and share what they have been doing.

CUT is loosely based on Bizet's opera comique Carmen, and will be a promenade piece for five or six dancers to perform in unusual spaces.

Smallpetitklein will perform short excerpts from the work in progress and invite the audience to discuss. This is an ideal opportunity for serious dance students to learn from the process of dance development.

Moishe's Bagel

Rip-roaring, foot-stomping, jazz-inflected klezmer and Balkan music from some of Scotland's finest musicians.

An intoxicating, life-affirming mix of Eastern European dance music, Middle-Eastern rhythms and virtuoso performances. Be prepared to be shaken out of the February doldrums.

Everything began when four of the band members met in a local tango outfit. With the recruitment of a percussion wizard the line-up found an unbeatable mix - a sound that blends folk dance, jazz, eastern rhythms and more. The result is a band which has the excitement of occasional improvisation with an energy that keeps the music highly danceable.

The Renard Ensemble were recently selected as Joint Winners of the Tunnell Trust awards for the season 2011/20152, and are very much looking forward to working with the Tunnell Trust.

They have performed public recitals at many venues around the South-East, including at the Taste London Festival in June, and the Serenata Classical Music Festival in Dorset in August 2010 and are proud to have been selected for Live Music Now! 2010

Townsend Productions: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

McGoldrick, McCusker and Doyle

This is a rare chance to see three of the world’s finest musicians share a stage together. Michael McGoldrick, John McCusker and John Doyle, members of the BBC Transatlantic Sessions play the Barn as part of a unique European tour. Master of flutes, whistles and Uillean pipes Mike is a founding member of Flook, and Lunasa and a current member of Capercaillie. Regarded as one of the greatest flute players of all time, Mike has toured extensively with the likes of Mark Knopfler, The Afro Celts, RTE Orhcestra and Kate Rusby. BBC Radio 2 folk Musican of the year 2006, he was again nominated this year and has just completed his first soundtrack for TG4 and the Smithsonian channel. John McCusker’s unique fiddle playing has earned him a worldwide reputation as one of the most gifted and versatile musicians of any genre. Renowned for his skill at transcending musical boundaries he has worked with artists ranging from Paulo Nutini and Jools Holland to Steve Earle and Rosanne Cash and has recorded with Paul Weller, Mark Knopfler and Ocean Colour Scene to name but a few. John Doyle’s gifts as guitarist, songwriter and vocalist have played an essential role in the ongoing renaissance of Irish traditional music. Now living in the states, John was the recent musical director for Joan Baez and toured with her for 2 year. One half of the stellar duo Liz Carroll and John Doyle, he is also a founding member of the internationally acclaimed Irish group Solas.

Deliverance: Meursault + Wounded Knee

Meursault is pronounced "Murr-So".

Edinburgh based musician Neil Pennycook began performing under the name Meursault in 2006 and has forged a path through the forest of dull, try hard indie bands by crafting a sound best described as epic lo-fi. At times soothing folk lament or blistering angst, backed by a band of upto 9 musicians determined to shake the fillings from your teeth and tears from your eyes, Neil’s voice soars with power and honesty. Meursault's second album, All Creatures Will Make Merry was released to critical acclaim in 2010 on Edinburgh’s Song By Toad label, and resulted in a number of festival appearances and tours across Europe. Not content with this, Neil also found time to record an album with Kenny Anderson (otherwise known as King Creosote) and Frances Donnelly (Animal Magic Tricks) called Cold Seeds. Support comes from Edinburgh's enigmatic Wounded Knee, who builds up layers of music, noise and sounds then sings folk songs over them. This gig is the second in our Deliverance series luring the best bands from the cities and abandoning them in the country, for your entertainment. All new music, all under a tenner.

Ben Kearsley (guitar)

Ben Kearsley was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He began classical guitar with Norman Quinney and later with Ian Smith. During his time at school Ben won the Young Musician of the Year 1993 at James Gillepie's High School and the Norman Quinney Prize for Classical Guitar. Performances at the Usher Hall and Queens Hall in Edinburgh took place during this time. After five years of full time study in music (one year at Napier University and four years at Birmingham Conservatoire) Ben graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire in 1998 with a BMus (Hons) 2:1. During this time Ben performed in masterclasses for Alirio Diaz, Jose Tomas, David Russell, Roland Dyens, Nigel North and Carlos Bonell. Performances at the Adrian Bolt Hall, Birmingham Town Hall and Symphony Hall took place during this time. During the 1990s Ben attended many summer schools in Scotland, England, France and Belgium. After studing Ben lived in La Paz, Bolivia and then Madrid, Spain. He taught guitar at the Conservatoirio De La Paz and performed at the British Embassy, Palacio Chico and Theatre Municipal. In 2004 Ben undertook his first tour of 20 concerts in Scotland. His CDs include Sunburst (2005), Koyunbaba (2006), Sakura (2007), Milwaukee (2008) and Tango en skai (2009). Ben has also been teaching guitar for 11 years, teaching for Fife Council (1998–1999), Conservatoiro De La Paz (1999-2000), Loretto School (2002-2004), Mansfield School of Music (since 2002) and Edinburgh University (since 2003).

With the monthly event in aid of Cancer Research UK having raised over £2000 during 2011, the aim is to raise even more this year with fun!
The fair will be on Saturday the 18th of February 2012, 11am till 3pm.
Entry is free. Soup and Sandwiches will be available for £3.

Jean de Florette tells the tale of Jean (Depardieu), hunchback who inherits a small farm in rural France. After their attempt to buy the farm fails, Cesar and Ugolin (Montand and Auteuil) scheme to drive Jean away, but when the poor Ugolin and Jean become friends, the deception turns bittersweet.

Influenced by Argentinian tango master Astor Piazzolla, the European classical school, New York Jazz and Scottish tune forms - 'superduo' Halton Quartet brings music with genuine heart and soul.

Comprising the talents of two of Scotland's most innovative duos, The Halton Quartet may be more familiar as Angus Lyon and Ruaridh Campbell, and Wingin' It. The four met during the 2007 Orkney Folk Festival and have since gone on to make music which is both rich in tradition and boldly forward-looking, with arrangements that expand and develop melodic ideas with imagination, subtlety and brio.

They are regular guests at the most prestigious international European festivals, including Santander Festival, Rheingau Music Festival and Festival Ljubljana. Festivals in the UK include Rye, Chipping Campden, Cheltenham and Bath. They gave a series of concerts in royal palaces in Spain under the organization of Patrimonio Nacional led by Her Majesty the Queen. They have performed several times at Kings Place, St Martin in the Fields and Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The Greenwich Trio has collaborated with conductor Barry Wordsworth and international viola soloist Rivka Golani. Barely four years after its formation, the ensemble aspires to be the most energetic, passionate and refined trio of the music world, and has given performances that have taken audiences by storm.

Slow Marathon

As the days begin to lengthen Deveron Arts has the ideal project to get you out of doors.

Ethiopian artist Mihret Kebede would like to have walked from Addis Ababa to Huntly to start her residency, but this was rather impossible for her. The distance of 5850 miles is only one barrier to the physical impossibility of such a feat, more constraining are border controls and visa restrictions.

To cover the distance from Addis to Huntly, Deveron Arts wants to bring 225 people together to walk a marathon of 26 miles.

Are you up for a challenge? You can walk alone or share the walk with a friend, just remember there is no winner or loser in the first ever Slow Marathon.

Starting in the town Square the marathon will encompass the historic landscape around Huntly, including the local landmarks of the Battlehill, Kinnoir woods and the Ba'hill. On arrival in Huntly we'll celebrate your achievement with tea and cake.

A parallel walking event with multi-world record holder Haile Gebrselassie will take place in Addis Ababa on the18th of March to see if we can gather enough miles to bring Mihret back home.

Burning Harpsichord: Rhodri Davies

Rhodri Davies was born in 1971 in Aberystwyth, Wales and now lives in Gateshead in the northeast of England. He plays harp, electric harp, live-electronics and builds wind, water and fire harp installations. His regular groups include: a duo with John Butcher, The Sealed Knot, a trio with David Toop and Lee Patterson, Common Objects, Cranc, a trio with John Tilbury and Michael Duch, SLW and Apartment House.

In 2008 he collaborated with the visual artist Gustav Metzger on ‘Self-cancellation’, a large-scale audio-visual collaboration in London and Glasgow. He also performs and researches contemporary music. New pieces for harp have been composed for him by: Eliane Radigue, Christian Wolff, Ben Patterson, Alison Knowles, Michael Pisaro, Carole Finer, Mieko Shiomi, Radu Malfatti and Yasunao Tone.

Kirsty McGee brings her honest, delicate and literate songwriting back out on the road and breathes Spring into the Barn.

McGee is held in high esteem by Karine Polwart and Annie Grace, labelled by some as a 'national treasure' and by others as a cult figure in UK songwriting. Finding its maverick roots in styles as diverse as folk, jazz, chanson and Americana, her unique work is held together by her lyrical style and astonishing voice.

Kinker to Banchory

Discover the natural and cultural heritage of Mid Deeside on this 10 mile walk suitable for adults.
We take the public bus (bring fare - approx. £5 or pass) to the historic village of Kincardine O'Neil. After visiting an old ford and ferry crossing on the Dee, we follow the Deeside Way, cross Potarch bridge and continue to Shooting Greens. From there we skirt the edge of Blackhall Forest overlooking Feughside, plus if weather and time permit, ascend General Burnett's Monument on Scolty Hill, which affords panoramic views. Leaving the forest we cross the Bridge of Dee to return to Banchory.
Please bring suitable outdoor clothing including waterproofs, stout footwear and packed lunch including drink.

Let Chris guide you on a mediumship walkaround of Haddo House, where you as investigators for the evening can find out who from Haddo's past still resides within the walls. Throughout the night you will be taught how to use a variety of paranormal equipment including Flir Thermal Imaging, EVP, video, infra red and digital cameras, K-2 and Gauss EMF Meters and movement sensors.

Thereafter...who knows what will happen!

A chance to learn or remember simple woodland skills: putting up a tarp; lighting a fire with a sparker and charcloth; using a Storm Kettle; whittling; sharpening a knife and axe; tying knots and putting a fire out. Run Balmoral

Run Balmoral is a festival of running situated on the Balmoral estate. A chance for runners of all ages and abilities to participate and compete, in one of the best running events in the North East of Scotland.

On April 15th 1912, the Titanic, the greatest ship in the world, slipped below the frigid waters of the Atlantic.

Yet Bruce J. Ismay, Managing Director or the White Star Line, stepped into a lifeboat and sailed away from the stricken ship, sailed away from his passengers, sailed away from the cries and screams and tears.

'The Man Who Left the Titanic' evokes that terrible voyage and asks whether Bruce Ismay only did what any of us might have done in the same circumstances, or should his actions that night consign his name to infamy?

7th Annual Spring Round Up

Popular outdoor theatre company Illyria make a triumphant return to Drum with Shaepeare's classic Henry V.

Doors open at 5pm for a 6.30pm start.

Catterline Cartie Challenge

The Catterline Cartie Challenge is an annual competition for home made "gravity powered" soapbox carties, which is held as part of Catterline Gala Weekend.

Carties are displayed at the Gala on the second Saturday in June, where voting takes place for prizes such as "Best Engineered" and "Best Decorated".

On the Sunday, the carties are time trialed down the brae from the Creel Inn to the harbour in a breathtaking display of skill, passion and nerves, with the winner being presented with the Connons Shield and hailed as the "Supreme Champion". There are also prizes for the Cartie Sprint race, a Constructors Trophy for the best aggregate time and a "Champagne Moment" for the most memorable incident of the day.

The next Catterline Cartie Challenge will take place on 9th & 10th June 2012, with inspection of the carties on Sunday 27th May (although we are flexible and can make alternative arrangements for teams travelling from far far away).

We have a number of places and they will be allocated on a strictly 'first come, first served' basis, so you will need to get your entry in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

If you would prefer to just watch, then you are welcome to come along to inspect the carties at the Gala on Saturday afternoon and to watch the time trials on Sunday afternoon. Please have a look at our "Notes for Spectators" and in particular note the areas where you can stand: For Safety Reasons, we cannot allow anyone on or beside the course while the time trials are taking place except for certain specified areas.
