Huntly Flood Study Report
Following the floods which badly affected numerous properties in the Meadows Area of Huntly on 1st and 2nd November 2010 consultants, Halcrow, were commissioned to undertake a study to determine the cause of the flooding, and provide recommendations on how recurrences could be avoided. The report is now available.
The report concludes that flooding was primarily caused by the River Deveron overtopping its banks at the Milton Farm and at Hill of Haugh. At Milton Farm the water flowed towards the A96 where it diverted into the Meadow Burn resulting in flows downstream which considerably exceeded the capacity of the embankments and culvert structures, and flooding resulted. Overtopping of the banks at the Hill of Haugh caused flooding of the Nordic Ski Centre and adjoining recreational area.
The report recommends the following actions to reduce the risk of future flooding.
- Heighten river embankments on south side of Deveron at Milton
- Construct length of embankment on south side of river east of Gibston Bridge
- Construct and heighten embankments along north side of Meadow Burn adjacent to housing and caravan site
- Check and heighten as necessary low sections of existing bunds along north and west side of Meadows development
- Increase the capacity of four culverts spanning the Meadow Burn
- Introduce sluice gate at confluence of Ittingstone Burn and River Deveron
Reports on the flooding are to be considered by the Marr Area Committee on 4 May 2010 and by the Infrastructure Services Committee on 13 May 2010.
