A to Z Index:

Rent Guarantee Scheme

This scheme aims to give you access to self-contained privately rented accommodation.

The scheme is available to:

  • single homeless people
  • childless couples who are normally aged 25 and over
  • who are on Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance or have income below £90 per week, and cannot afford a deposit or rent in advance.

It also attempts to overcome the reluctance of some landlords to accept DWP applicants.

The scheme:

  • provides landlords with a written guarantee instead of a cash deposit
  • Covers rent arrears and uninsured damage and loss
  • Means you don't need to have money to get a flat

What Does the Scheme offer Landlords?

  • Rent paid until Housing Benefit is processed
  • Housing Benefit paid direct to the Landlord
  • Liaison with Housing Benefit Section to ensure claims are processed quickly
  • A Development Worker is available to tenants and landlords to deal with any issues that arise
  • A 6 month contract which can be renewed by the landlord
  • Screening of prospective tenants
  • No obligation to take on prospective tenants
