Digital Library Service
Aberdeenshire Libraries now offer a service for downloading eBooks and eAudiobooks. The Digital Library Service is free to Aberdeenshire residents; it’s easy to use, available 24/7 and has no late fees.
You can transfer eAudiobooks and eBooks to your PC, Mac, MP3 player, iPod, mobile phone and eReaders.
We recommend you read the Getting Started advice on the left hand side of the Digital Library Service before you use the service.
Not a member yet? It’s now possible for Aberdeenshire residents to join online and access the Digital Library Service. For more information visit our online library membership page and complete the registration form.
First steps
To use the service you will need
- Your library card number
- Your PIN number
- A computer with Internet connection
The first step when using the digital service is the installation of the following software:
- For eAudiobooks: OverDrive® Media Console™.
- For eBooks: Adobe® Digital Editions.
Both pieces of software take a couple of minutes to install and this only needs to be done when using the service for the first time. You can find Overdrive Media Console and Adobe Digital Editions on the right hand side of the Digital Library Service
The Overdrive Media Console is where all your eAudiobooks will be downloaded to, and from there you can move and transfer them to mobile devices or play directly from your computer.
Similarly Adobe Digital Editions is where all your eBooks will be downloaded to, and from there you can move and transfer them to mobile devices or read directly from your computer.

How many titles can I take out at the same time?
You can have up to 10 items out at a time.
What is 'Your Basket'?
When you view an available title, you can click 'Add to basket' to place the title in your basket. Placing a title in your basket is like placing it on temporary reserve; as long as the title is in your basket, it will remain available for you to check out. The system will automatically remove a title from your basket 30 minutes after you have placed it there, making the title available to other borrowers. Our system allows you to put up to 7 titles in your basket at the same time.
When I check out a title, how many days do I get to keep it?
Lending periods can vary from 7, 14 or 21 days. You can select the lending period on a title-by-title basis. In the course of checking out any title, you will have the option to select a different lending period for that specific title.
Can I return items early?
Due to publisher licensing agreements, WMA eAudiobooks cannot be returned early. They will automatically be returned at the end of the lending period.
It is possible to return eBooks and MP3 audio books early. Find out how by visiting the Digital Library Service help pages.
Can I renew items I have checked out?
The items you have checked out cannot be renewed, but you can check them out again if they are available when the checkout expires.
What happens when I place an item on hold?
You can place up to 5 titles on hold at a given time. The title you have placed on hold will be reserved for you to check out once it becomes available. When the title is available for you, you will receive an email that the item will be held for 3 days starting from when you are emailed notice that the title is available.
