Services for the Visually Impaired

If you are blind or partially sighted, there are some services in Aberdeenshire libraries that may be of interest to you and improve your access to library materials and resources.

You can use the library catalogue to reserve any title and you will be informed when it is ready for collection. If you would like to request the purchase of a title for library stock please use our online request form.

Large Print Books

  • All Aberdeenshire libraries offer a selection of books in large print. These include fiction by popular authors and a variety of non-fiction titles.

Talking Books

  • Audio talking books are available in libraries in various formats. These can be borrowed free of charge. Have a look to see which new talking books have been added to stock.

VIP Service

  • A service is available for Registered Visually Impaired to receive Talking Books on CD by post. For information on this service contact the Outreach Librarian by phone at 01651 872707 or by email alis@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

Large Keyboards

  • Large keyboards which have keys that are much larger than standard keyboards are available in all the libraries.

Software

  • Magnifying software which magnifies the text to make it easier to read
  • Narrator software reads the text for you

National Library for the Blind

  • The RNIB National Library Service offers a free library service for visually impaired people, which includes an extensive collection of braille books, small collection of large print and online reference services. There is also a audio book service for which there is an annual subscription
