Library Direct - housebound service

volunteer delivering a bag of books to a housebound readerLibrary Direct is a free library service where library staff or volunteers will deliver your choice of books, audio books, DVDs and CDs directly to your front door every four weeks. The service is available to all residents of Aberdeenshire who are unable to visit their library due to:

  • Disability, infirmity or illness
  • Being the carer of someone affected by these conditions

This may be short term, such as recovering from a stay in hospital or a longer term arrangement. For more information contact the Information Literacy and Learning Librarian.

Services for the visually impaired

If you are blind or partially sighted, the following services and resources may be of interest to you.

Large print books

All Aberdeenshire libraries offer books in large print. New titles can be reserved on the library catalogue

Audio books

Audio books are available in libraries in various formats including CD and playaway. 

Digital library

Download e-audiobooks and e-books. You can transfer e-audiobooks and e-books to your PC, Mac, MP3 player, iPod, mobile phone and e-readers.

VIP postal service

A service is available for those who are visually impaired to receive audio books on CD by post. For information contact the Information Literacy and Learning Librarian

Assistive Technology

  • Keyboards with larger keys are available in all libraries
  • Magnifying software which enlarges the text to make it easier to read
  • Narrator software reads the text for you
