Biodiversity in the Cairngorms

The Cairngorms Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) is concerned with sustaining biodiversity across the whole of the Cairngorms area. The area is one with an outstanding variety of wildlife habitats and natural features of importance internationally, nationally and locally.

The key objectives of the Cairngorms LBAP are

  • to take forward national biodiversity priorities (UK Habitat and Species Action Plans) by helping to deliver them at local level
  • to conserve locally important species and habitats
  • engage local people and visitors in the management of biodiversity and ensure that they benefit from biodiversity
  • to bring together in partnership those working in the Cairngorms to better achieve biodiversity conservation

Aberdeenshire Council has been supporting the Cairngorms LBAP since its establishment in 1998. A Steering Group was established with representatives from the nineteen different organisations including local authorities, government agencies, farming groups and conservation bodies. The Cairngorms National Park Authority hosts the Cairngorms LBAP Project.

What has the Cairngorms LBAP achieved to date?

  • a comprehensive audit of the Cairngorms habitat and species has been compiled
  • number of practical biodiversity projects such as the Non Native Fish Project and the Upland Grain Project have been undertaken
  • work to raise awareness and profile of the areas biodiversity issues has been undertaken within the Cairngorms communities
  • a plan of action for the maintenance and enhancement of the Cairngorms biodiversity resource has been produced through consultation with the local and national agencies and organisations as well as local communities.
