Round-the-world cyclist and world record breaker supports Aden Bike Challenge

5th March 2012

Buchan’s first bike challenge has received a welcome boost from world record-holding cyclist Mark Beaumont, who has given his support to the family event.

“Opportunities such as this are a brilliant way to capture the challenge spirit and encourage children to be the adventurers of the future,” he said. “This family cycle could even be the first step in sowing the seed for a future round-the-world cyclist!”

He was speaking ahead of an appearance in Aberdeen on March 11, where he will be talking about his recent Atlantic Odyssey expedition.

“I think it’s important that we learn to look for the adventurer in ourselves and cycling is a great and affordable way to do that. There is a great sense of community amongst cyclists and the activity is beneficial in so many ways,” he added.

“When I completed my first 10-mile cycle as a youngster, I didn’t realise that a few years later I would be undertaking an 18,000-mile, round-the-world challenge and cycling from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego!”

Buchan Area Manager Chris White praised Mark’s comments, adding: “It’s really exciting that an event like this can attract comment from such an accomplished cyclist.

“Individuals like Mark are great role models and events like the Aden Bike Challenge provide great opportunities to try something new and exciting.

“I took part in a coast-to-coast challenge last year which proves that once you start cycling, you never know what it could lead to.”

Families and individuals are encouraged to get on their bikes to take part in the ride, which will be held on Sunday, March 18.

It will take place between Peterhead and Aden Country Park, promising to be both a relaxing and fun day.

The event is being developed by Aberdeenshire Council along with local community partners and the charity Chest Heart Stroke Scotland.

It is part of efforts to increase the number of journeys made by bicycle in and around Peterhead as part of the Cycle Demonstration Town project.

Entry to the Aden Bike Challenge is still open but places are limited, so if you want to find the adventurer in you and follow in Mark’s tyre tracks, visit the Aden Country Park website and register your place: http://www.adencountrypark.org.uk/
