Youth Music Initiative

Various programmes are in place to provide instrumental and vocal tuition as well as to meet the initial Youth Music Initiative target, that by 2006 every primary school pupil would have the opportunity to access one year’s free music tuition by primary 6.

Kodaly Singing and Musicianship Programme

Zoltan KodalyKodaly was a Hungarian composer and music educator. He was passionately devoted to helping children of all ages to develop their singing and musical skills. His philosophy of music education led to a highly sequential system of teaching music. The system was developed by those influenced by Kodaly's vision of music education.

The Kodaly Singing and Musicianship Programme is a method of teaching that encompasses all areas of musicianship. It is delivered by a team of Kodaly Instructors in Primary Schools throughout Aberdeenshire. Each Primary School receives Kodaly tuition on a weekly basis for one term per academic year. All four Special Needs Schools receive Kodaly tuition all year round.

YMI funded Instrumental Instructors

A team of Instrumental Instructors are deployed in all 17 Community School Networks. Aberdeenshire is geographically challenging when it come to the delivery of music by peripatetic teachers and these instructors play a vital role in filling gaps in instrumental provision.

Aberdeenshire Jazz Programme 'Mistakes are Cool'

Jazz ProgrammeThe Jazz programme is aimed at Primary Schools with each session tailor made to the school. Subject material includes, an introduction to Jazz and Improvisation, a potted history of music, style, listening and IT. Training sessions are offered to staff in schools in order to encourage development and sustainability of the programme.

Richard Ingham and Richard Michael, both of whom are internationally renowned in this field, deliver the programme. In addition to the school visits the Jazz Programme has facilitated the formation of the Saxophone Orchestra and the Jazz Ensemble.

Aberdeenshire Youth Music Forum Concert

Concert at Inverurie Academy on Thursday 13th June 2013 at 7pm featuring various projects ffunded by Youth Music Initiative.
