Gypsy/Travellers

Aberdeenshire Council is undertaking a review of its policy on managing unauthorised Gypsy/Traveller encampments. The draft revised policy is detailed below.

Policy and Procedures for Managing Gypsy / Traveller Encampments

Aberdeenshire Council`s policy with regard to management of unauthorised encampments of Gypsy/Travellers was approved by the Council on 18th September 2008. The policy supercedes the one that had been in place since 2002. The Policy specifies how the Council will manage unauthorised encampments and contains a Good Neighbour Code which Gypsy/Travellers are expected to abide by.

The lack of adequate accomodation for Gypsy/Travellers in North East Scotland often leads to Gypsy/Travellers using public and private land to set up encampments.The Council is trying to identify land where transit sites could be established. These sites would accomodate up to 8 caravans, plus associated vehicles, and would be provided with a refuse skip and portaloo upon the arrival of the Gypsy/Travellers. Suggestions for possible locations for transit sites can be sent to Planning and Environmental Services (Environmental Health), Gordon House, Blackhall Road, Inverurie AB51 3WA or telephone 01467 628153.

Gypsy Traveller outcome statement and action plan

In January 2008, Craigforth Consultancy & Research was commissioned by Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray Councils to carry out an Accommodation Needs Assessment of Gypsies/Travellers in the Grampian area.
