British Red Cross Transport Service

Making Travel Possible

This service operates on referral by the NHS.

The British Red Cross offers a Transport and Escort Service for medical appointments. We provide:

  • We help people get to appointments, such as seeing the doctor or hospital out-patients.
  • a suitable vehicle with a driver
  • an escort if you need one
  • door to door assistance
  • help with bags and luggage

A Quality Service

Training

Our drivers and escorts are all trained in helping people who have difficulty travelling for one reason or another.

Providing services to groups of people

The British Red Cross provides its Transport and Escort Service on a contract basis. The scheme is professionally organised and governed at all times by the general principles of confidentiality, reliability, accessibility, flexibility and quality, and we have an equal opportunities policy.

Other key features of the scheme are:

  • Written standards of service, emphasising punctuality and reliability
  • Complaints procedure
  • References taken on all drivers and escorts
  • British Red Cross training for all drivers and escorts
  • Vehicle checks
  • Public liability insurance cover

The Transport and Escort Service gives people who need help with transport a means of maintaining independence. They have access to essential services, can carry out important everyday tasks and enjoy life more fully.

This Biritish Red Cross Service makes a marked difference to the lives of people in need. It also maintains the skills which Members can use in time of disaster.

The British Red Cross is well known for helping in major disasters. We also care about the personal crises that transport problems can cause.

Here's an example of the sort of situation where we can help:

  • A young mother needed to take her severely disabled son to a hospital appointment and look after a healthy toddler at the same time. Our driver picked her up from home with an escort, who stayed with her during the hospital visit, and then drove her back.
