Active Schools Old

In February 2003, the Scottish Executive launched the National Physical Activity Strategy, which clearly defined Active Schools as an area of focus.
Sportscotland is committed to investing in this inclusive concept with its essential aim of getting school-aged children more active, more often.
To develop the Active Schools national initiative, in partnership with Sportscotland, Aberdeenshire Council is developing its network of Active Schools Coordinators to support schools in providing more physical activity opportunities for young people in order to develop a life long learning habit that will lead to a more active and healthy lifestyle.
What will an Active Schools Coordinator Do?
The Active Schools Coordinator will increase physical activity opportunities for primary and secondary school pupils to participate in regular, frequent, safe and fun physical activity incorporating sport, play, health and active travel in line with the Sportscotland Sport 21 strategy.
They will look to build sustainable structures by developing teachers, parents and volunteers to assist with activities and develop links with community clubs to offer pathways for children to continue to participate.
What is an Active Primary School?
An Active Primary School is a school, which maximises safe and fun physical activity opportunities for children and all those associated with the school (including parents, staff, PTA and school board).
An Active Primary School is a school which:
- has a shared philosophy and ethos on physical activity;
- adopts a whole school policy for promoting physical activity;
- has a realistic Action Plan to allow physical activity to take place within the formal and informal curriculum, and the wider environment of the school;
- initiates and develops health partnerships which facilitate the promotion of physical activity
- has a named individual responsible for planning, delivering (where appropriate) and monitoring the policy and practice; and ultimately
- increases the participation rates of children in physical activity both inside and outside the school.
