Banchory Network - Academy
Welcome to the Banchory Network Active Schools web page. This page provides information about programmes and activities taking place in your area. The schools in the Banchory Network are Banchory Academy, Banchory Primary, Crathes Primary, Crossroads Nursery, Drumoak Primary, Durris Primary, Hill of Banchory Primary and Strachan Primary.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you as your new Active Schools Coordinator for the Banchory network, I will be covering Kate's maternity leave.
My name is Holly McIntosh and I have a degree in sports and exercise science. Since leaving University I have worked as a Trampoline coach, with oil companies doing work place health promotion and most recently I have spent the last year working with a school in Aberdeen carrying out PE with their Early Years and Reception departments. I hope to bring some new ideas and lots of enthusiasm for sport and exercise to your schools and continue with the excellent programmes that Kate has in place.

Volunteer Opportunities
The Banchory Active Schools programme is always on the lookout for new volunteers to help within the schools. The success of the programme can only continue to be developed with the help of willing and enthusiastic parents. This may be help in current activities or perhaps you would like to set up a new activity.
Current volunteer opportunities:
- After-school running for fun at Hill of Banchory or Banchory. Thursdays at 2.35-3.20pm.
- Lunchtime Skipping clubs throughout Term 1
- Extra-curricular athletics clubs

Programmes and Activities
Active From the Start
Banchory School, Hill of Banchory School and Cross Roads Nursery will soon be introducing this programme to their Nursery classes. This will involve the children working on core competencies during the school day and they will then also receive a ‘Skill Bag’ to take home and perform the activities with their parents. Training workshops will be set-up to work with parents.
First clubgolf
All P5 pupils will be introduced to Scottish Golf’s National Strategy for golf, clubgolf. They will complete a block of lessons involving modified golf equipment then invited to attend Banchory golf club to undertake the next stage of the programme.
Cross Country
All P4-7 pupils will be invited to take part in the Annual Banchory Primaries Inter-School Cross Country event which is held in Term 4 each year. In 2008/09 the event was highly successful, despite the weather, with over 500 children running.
Extra-curricular Schools Clubs
I am currently working with local clubs, coaches, volunteers and school staff to set up a variety of extra-curricular school activities for children across Banchory to take part in. Watch this space!
Go For It
Banchory Primary will be taking part in this year-round incentive project to encourage school communities to travel actively (walking or cycling) to school, even just part of the way, wherever possible. Every time a pupil walks / cycles to or from school they will get a tick on the wall chart. When the pupil has 40 ticks, they will earn a reward card that they can redeem for free access to certain leisure facilities across Aberdeenshire.
Orienteering
Children in the upper primary (P4-7) will receive a block of 5 orienteering sessions in Term 4 culminating in a festival at Crathes Castle plus an invitation to attend the Scottish Schools Orienteering Festival. Children in the lower primary (Nursery to P3) will receive a block of 6 introduction to orienteering sessions.
Young Leaders
In term 4 of 2007/08 Primary 6 children from Durris, Banchory, Hill of Banchory and Drumoak successfully completed a 6-week course to become ‘Young Leaders’. The skills they were taught in the course will now be developed further as they deliver activities during the school year, to younger children within their schools. The next stage of training for Primary 6 pupils will take place again in term 4 of 2008/09.
