The Registrar General holds the Adopted Children Register in which all adoptions in Scotland are registered. No information about the birth parents of the child is contained in this Register.
An extract of any entry contained in the Adopted Childrens Register can be purchased from the General Register Office for Scotland. Persons aged 16 or over may apply for original birth details.
The Family Care Adoption Society in Edinburgh operates the Birth Link Register for Scotland Adoption Unit. This Register has been in existence since 1984 and may be helpful to a person born or adopted in Scotland wishing to make contact with the birth family, or for a birth parent or relative wishing to make contact with the child originally placed for adoption. Adoption counsellors at Family Care may act as an intermediary between the adopted person and the birth parent. For more information please contact Birth Link Family Care.
In addition, Aberdeenshire Council Social Work may be able to help you with matters relating to adoption.
