Becoming a British citizen is a significant event in your life. As a British citizen, you are joining a community made up of many different backgrounds, cultures and faiths. To celebrate the occasion of becoming a British citizen, the Government has introduced Citizenship Ceremonies.

Shirley Dickie, Registrar for Peterhead congratulates Olaolu Popoola at the first Citizenship Ceremony in Arbuthnot House Peterhead, August 2004

The Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 includes provisions that require all applicants, aged 18 and over, for naturalisation or registration as a British Citizen to take a citizenship oath and pledge at a citizenship ceremony conducted by a Registrar.

Citizenship Ceremonies are private and not open to the public. In some instances the new citizen can invite guests to their ceremony. When the Home Office has approved an application, the applicant will be notified of the appropriate local authority and provided with contact details in order that arrangements for their ceremony can be made.

More information is available on the British Citizenship pages of the Home Office website.
