To report an untidy verge, contact the Roads team by Phone, Email or Text Message.

We maintain approximately 10,000 Km of rural roadside verges, along with the verges in urban areas:

  • Rural road verges receive a 1metre wide swathe cut immediately next to each road edge;
  • Cutting on corners will be carried out on the inside of bends only, to provide forward visibility;
  • All rural roadside verges are cut twice during the growing season usually between May and June and then again between mid July and the end of August. This regime allows nesting birds to rear the young and to ensure a consistent height of grass;
  • During the Autumn/Winter period, there will be what is termed a “full width” cut. This is a complete cut of all vegetation including tree and shrub pruning of the full extent of the verges on either side of the road;
  • Some verges of particular interest are treated differently. These verges contain significant species of plants, which are allowed to grow and reproduce in a natural way;
  • Urban verges are maintained to a higher standard, similar to that of the other Open Spaces nearby and give a consistent approach to the maintenance of the area.
