Aberdeenshire has 9% of Scotland’s land area but 26% of the national arable total. Although there are 7122 agricultural holdings in Aberdeenshire, the number of farm businesses is estimated at 2900, resulting in an average farm business size of 180ha (440acres). Over 9200 people were recorded as being employed or engaged in agriculture within Aberdeenshire in June 2007 (2% of local employment) contributing to a food and drink sector which provides 10,500 jobs in Grampian – 30% of the Scottish food industry total.
