Aberdeenshire Council Procurement: Bite-sized Food Facts

  • Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council have a joint procurement service - Central Procurement Unit based in Woodhill House – tel. 01224 665650.

  • Total expenditure on meat and meat products between Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council was projected to be in excess of £650,000 in the 2008/9 financial year, of which over £550,000 was locally sourced.

  • On 29th September 2008, eight Scottish Councils, including Aberdeenshire, received a highly commended Government Opportunities Scotland Excellence in Public Procurement Award for their work with Quality Meat Scotland following full traceability audits that showed all red meat served in public facilities is sourced locally.

  • Mike Hearnden, School Meals Manager for Aberdeenshire Council demonstrated to farmers attending the Turriff Show in 2008, full traceability of beef products right back to Aberdeenshire farms where cattle were reared.

  • Aberdeenshire Council spent almost £200,000 on red meat produced in North East Scotland between April and December 2008.

  • All fresh chicken is sourced from within Scotland.

  • Beef, pork and lamb are sourced locally as Specially Selected Scotch Meat from an Aberdeen butcher using nominated local meat processors.

  • The eight Care Homes in Aberdeenshire spend around £20,500 annually on fresh fish from suppliers in Portsoy, Macduff, Fraserburgh, Peterhead, Gourdon and Arbroath.

  • All eggs used by the Council are produced in Aberdeenshire.

  • Aberdeenshire Council spends around £10,000 per month on locally produced fruit and vegetables including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, leeks, lettuces, onions, parsnips, potatoes and turnips when available and in season.

  • Milk and dairy products are sourced within Scotland, much of it from our local farms.

  • The distributor of frozen haddock and whiting for Aberdeenshire School Meals uses fish merchants and processors in Aberdeen and Peterhead.

  • Bakery products are all obtained from bakers in Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen who use local eggs, milk and cream, and also prepared bakery mixes from a well-known manufacturer in Glenbervie.

  • Work is underway to encourage even more local food suppliers to contribute to the requirements of Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council.
