Slow Food in Aberdeen
The Aberdeenshire Convivium of Slow Food organised a “Grazing Supper” for 850 Micro Biologist’s who held a convention at the AECC at the beginning of September. To highlight the rich diversity available from throughout the region, local producers who meet the “Slow Food” ethos of Good, Clean and Fair were invited by the event organisers to show cased their harvest at a taster supper on the first night of the 4 day conference.
Delegates from all over the world enthusiastically “grazed” their way round a veritable Smorgasbord of local fare, from the finest Aberdeen Angus Beef, freshly caught langoustine.
Arbroath Smokies, roasted venison, seasonal vegetables and soft fruits all featured on a menu that included, traditionally made oatcakes, pork pies from spotty pigs and freshly squeezed beetroot and carrot juices, all rounded off with traditional Crannachan, strawberries and blueberries and locally made ice cream, all served and presented by the individual producers themselves and assisted by slow food volunteers.
Dr Chris Fenn, Aberdeenshire’s convivium leader, and one of the event organisers says “Conference visitors were invited to sample a broad range of traditional foods of the highest quality and actually engage with the producers at the same time, many bought chutneys and puddings to take home, and the local beer and prawns seemed especially popular.
This was a tremendous opportunity to show off some of the best food Grampian region has to offer and the feedback from the delegates from all corners of the globe was hugely complementary.
