Travel Plan Initiatives:
Maintaining a high profile through interesting initatives is important for any travel plan. You can read below about some examples of initiatives we have delivered to promote sustainable travel to our staff.
Walk Week: Each year we promote Walk to Work Week. Sometimes this is encouraged through a Pedometer Challenge and other awareness raising. This year lunchtime walks were organised to raise awareness of the health benefits of a more active lifestyle.
Promoting Cycling : The Council’s Travel Plan identifies the need for improving facilities for cyclists at all major centres of employment. With over 500 places of employment within the Council the Transportation Team encourage staff to suggest new locations in need of cycle parking.
There are also discounts for employees available at Alpine Bikes (01224 211455), Ellon Cycles (01358 723 724), Ruftrack Bikes in Stonehaven (01569 767974) and Changing Gears in Inverurie 01467 670111 - 5% on bikes and 10% on accessories. Excludes sale prices and any future savings made from salary sacrifice schemes. Some dealers do not include childrens bikes in this promotion. Please check with dealer. These businesses can help you choose the right size of bike and offer valuable follow up support. Just show you ID badge when purchasing. All employers can negotiate similar discounts.
FREE Car Share Scheme: The Travel Plan established a car share scheme www.carshareaberdeenshire.com launched in March 2004 consisting of a public scheme and private scheme for Council employees. The scheme is promoted through induction, payroll, staff e-mail and intranet and employee newsletters and annually as part of National Liftshare Week. You can promote this FREE scheme to your employees, colleagues, friends and family.
For Liftshare Day 2007 actors from a theatre group
were brought in to highlight car sharing to staff. Iain Gabriel, Director of Transportation and Infrastructure is pictured opposite with the actors.
Some examples of promotional items can be viewed below:
Public Transport: Currently employees can access discounts with First Aberdeen as part of their Corporate Travel Club. The Council will consider joining any similar discount scheme made available by Stagecoach.
Staff are encouraged to use Traveline Scotland to access information on public transport timetables. You can also phone on 0871 200 22 33.
Mobile and flexible working: As part of the Council's ongoing work to improve services and efficiency a major programme introducing mobile and flexible working is underway. The project is called WorkSmart.
Other news:
Bus operators have also provided printed timetable materials for Council premises. You can view a journey planner for Woodhill House, our Council HQ by clicking here.
Aberdeenshire Council takes every opportunity to promote the Travel Plan to businesses as an example of best practice and welcomes any enquiries from businesses or individuals.
