Road Safety Education & Activities
Aberdeenshire Council, in partnership with Grampian Police, is involved in a number of Road Safety Activities run in Aberdeenshire schools and academies
Primary Schools
Road Safety Magic Shows are aimed at early primary year pupils, teaching important road safety messages through the medium of magic. View press coverage of the event from the Times Education Supplement and Aberdeenshire Council's Press Release.
Walking Buses (pictured: Fraserburgh North School's Walking Bus launch) can help pupils learn about travlling safely and actively on the way to school. Walking Buses are set up by individual schools in partnership with Grampian Police's Road Safety Unit and the Health Improvement, Active Schools and School Travel Planning initiatives. Academies
Safe Drive Stay Alive, aimed at S5 pupils, is a thought-provoking road safety initiative highlighting the potentially devastating effects of a serious car crash. The campaign targets young people approaching driving age and aims to leave them with a very hard-hitting and lasting message about their vulnerability. Visit the Aberdeenshire Community Safety Partnership website, the Safe Drive Stay Alive website or Safe Drive Stay Alive on Bebo for further details.
The next Safe Drive Stay Alive is scheduled for 3-6 2009 November at Aberdeen's Beach Ballroom.
STARS is our Secondary Two and Road Safety project, in which groups of S2 pupils work with theatre professionals from Firefly Youth Theatre to create and perform a short road safety play for their peers. STARS, now in it's third round, visits academies every year; for more information, please read the STARS documents below or contact us.
Activities for all ages
SeeMe Trial - As you may be aware, Aberdeenshire Council is running a number of initiatives to improve the safety of pupils travelling on home-to-school transport services. In conjunction with 'Bus Stop' (see below), Aberdeenshire is one of three local authorities trialling the effectiveness of SeeMe, a new, interactive school bus stop developed and used widely in Sweden .
SeeMe is a stand-alone, real-time warning unit activated by a small device placed in a child's school bag. The device triggers a flashing light mounted on top of specially-developed bus stop signs at school transport pick-up / drop-off points to signal the presence of a child to approaching drivers.
The initial SeeMe trial period runs from 20th of May 2009 until the end of the summer term; further trials will be undertaken in the new school term.
Evaluation of trial results will inform future decisions on the potential roll-out of SeeMe. The trials are currently being evaluated by a range of different means; if you wish to take part in the online survey, please click here.
Bus Stop! is a resource pack created by Aberdeenshire Council and Talisman Energy (UK) Limited; the pack is themed to increase the safety awareness of young people using public and school transport, focusing in on distractions and their potential consequences. The pack and campaign are rolled out to all Aberdeenshire Schools and Academies.
Schools across Scotland can tap into the resource via a website, www.1second1life.co.uk, which has an electronic version of the teaching pack and a copy of the two teaching films.
