Road Safety Plan - Summary

In 1987 the UK Government announced a target of reducing road casualties by 1/3 based on the 1981-85 average by the year 2000.

This challenging target was met by Aberdeenshire Council in 1999. In March 2000 the UK Government announced three new targets based on the 1994-98 average to be achieved by 2010.

Aberdeenshire Council's second Road Safety Plan, launched in October that year, set out our own targets based on the Government targets but with even more ambitious targets for reducing child and slight casualties. Halfway through the 10-year target period, this Plan demonstrates that we are well on our way to meeting all three targets by 2010.

Indeed, we have already met target three on reducing slight casualties. Despite our good progress to date, we will continue to make every effort to ensure that we meet the casualty reduction targets in 2010. Achieving the targets becomes progressively harder but we are committed to making Aberdeenshire’s roads safer for everyone.

Summary of Aberdeenshire Targets

Group Aberdeenshire target by 2010 1994 - 1998 average 2004 Target by 2010
Target 1 40% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured 218.6 151 131
Target 2 50% reduction in the number of children injured 115 65 57
Target 3 10% reduction in the number of people slightly injured 751 582 675

This Plan shows the areas where we are performing well and also where we have still got work to do – particularly with regard to the older driver. This Plan and the measures and strategies set out in it provides the focus for our road safety efforts over the next five years and identifies the improvement areas we will concentrate on while continuing to do those things we do well.
