A to Z Index:

Security Checks

Prior to joining Aberdeenshire Council, dependant on the post, a number of Security Checks may be undertaken. They are as follows:

Criminal Record Declaration Form

Some posts are defined as exempted employment within the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (ROA) by the Exclusions and Exceptions (Scotland) Order 2003 (as amended).
In this event, you will be asked to disclose all convictions, spent and unspent, including those resulting in admonitions, cautions, and any other police dealings.

Declaration of any convictions will not in itself debar you from being considered for the post. You are, however, informed that failure to bring any conviction to the notice of the Council, either on this form or at the subsequent interview, could lead to disciplinary action, including summary dismissal where appropriate.
Should you be invited for interview, a Criminal Record Declaration form will be sent to you for completion. This form should be completed, signed and brought with you to the interview in a sealed envelope. This will be explained in the accompanying notes that are attached to the form.

If you are offered an appointment with the Council, the completed form will be retained as part of your confidential personal file. If your application is unsuccessful, the form will be kept for twelve months, along with your application form, and then both will be destroyed.

Disclosure Scotland

Protecting the vulnerable through Safer Recruitment

Some posts, particularly those dealing with young people and protected adults will require the successful candidate's details to be submitted for a criminal history information check. This means they will be required to complete a Disclosure Scotland application form regardless of whether the candidate has had prior checks carried out.

A preferred candidate will be offered a post “subject to the outcome of the disclosure check being satisfactory” and this is required prior to commencement of employment. Aberdeenshire Council will administer and pay for the process.

Overseas Criminal Records Check

An Overseas Criminal Records Check is required where the work involves dealing with young people or protected adults, and the candidate has spent a period of 3 months or more in an overseas country within the last 5 years. This check is in addition to a Disclosure Scotland check, as Disclosure Scotland currently cannot access overseas criminal records.
