Missed Refuse Collections Due to Severe Weather
If we miss your refuse collection due to severe weather, and if it is safe and possible for you to do so, please make every effort to take your waste to the nearest Household Waste and Recycling Centre.
If weather and road conditions improve, we will do our best to come back so please keep your bin out until the end of the following working day. For example if your nomal collection is on a Tuesday, leave your bin out till 5pm on Wednesday. If your normal collection is on a Friday, you can put your bin out again on Monday morning till 5pm. However, please keep it in over the weekend if conditions are wintery so that snow ploughs and gritters are not obstructed. If we have not collected your refuse at the end of the second working day, we will not be able to come back until the next scheduled collection date. You may place extra bags of waste alongside your refuse bin on the next refuse collection day. This is the ONLY time we can accept extra waste outwith the refuse bin.
Missed Recycling Collections Due to Severe Weather
If we miss your kerbside recycling collection due to severe weather, please take your boxes back in until the next collection, or use a Recycling Point or Centre if possible (subject to road and weather conditions). Alternatively, you can put out extra bags alongside your recycling box at your next collection. For safety, please put GLASS INSIDE YOUR BOX ONLY, NEVER IN A BAG. Please separate all other extra materials so that there is only one type of material in each extra bag (eg - only plastic bottles in one bag, only cans in another). If we miss a four-weekly paper recycling collection, we will be unable to return before your next collection date. Please put out your bin for your next scheduled collection and we will endeavour to collect it, weather permitting.
Using Recycling Points during Severe Winter Weather
We do our best to keep Recycling Points emptied at suitable intervals, but we may experience difficulties in accessing some of these facilities in bad weather. Sometimes the problem is simply safe access to the containers without risking damage to private vehicles or injury to pedestrians. In other cases, snow is piled up next to the containers after car parks have been cleared, which means our vehicles cannot get near enough to lift and empty them. If you have difficulty accessing a Recycling Point or find the containers full, please store your recyclables until the weather has improved. If you have a kerbside recycling collection, please see the information in the Missed Recycling Collections section (above) about putting out extra recycling.
Missed Refuse or Recycling Collections When Not Due to Severe Weather
For missed collections not caused by severe weather (it may be a vehicle breakdown or similar), please leave your refuse bin and / or recycling boxes out and we will make a collection as soon as we can.
Please call the Wasteline on 0845 600 3 900 the day following the missed collection, after 12 noon, if your bin has still not been emptied. Please see below if your four-weekly paper recycling collection is missed.
Need Another Recycling Box?
If you find that you have more material than you can fit in your box, regardless of regular or missed collections, please contact us for an additional recycling box, free of charge.
Missed Four-weekly Paper Recycling Collections
If we miss a four-weekly paper recycling bin collection, due to severe weather or vehicle breakdown or any other reason, we will be unable to return before your next collection date. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Any excess paper can be taken to your nearest Recycling Point or Centre (subject to road and weather conditions). Please put your bin out on your next scheduled collection date and we will endeavour to collect it weather permitting.
Free Recycling & Waste Disposal
Please note, you can also dispose of household refuse and recycling free of charge at Household Waste and Recycling Centres.
