Ukrainian refugees Council Tax discount and exemption
Ukrainian refugees who were residing in Ukraine immediately before 1st January 2022 and left Ukraine in connection with the Russian invasion which took place on 24th February 2022 might be entitled to a Council Tax discount or exemption.
From 1st April 2023 to qualify, the property that you live in must be both:
- The sole or main residence of at least one person who holds permission to enter or stay in the United Kingdom granted under the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme
- Made available by an approved sponsor under the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme, and you are being provided the accommodation without paying rent in return
If you meet the criteria, we will bill your household as if you were not living there or if you live alone you will not have to pay Council Tax. From 1st April 2023, if you do not meet the above criteria you will be liable to pay Council Tax.
How to apply
To apply please email the following to council.tax@aberdeenshire.gov.uk:
- Evidence of your Visa and Home Office paperwork confirming you hold permission to enter or stay in the United Kingdom under the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme
- Evidence that the property has been provided by an approved sponsor under the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme
- Evidence that you were residing in Ukraine immediately before 1st January 2022 and left Ukraine in connection with the Russian invasion
- Details of the address you have moved into and the date you moved into the property
