Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships incorporate a work based qualification earned while gaining valuable work experience in your chosen career path. While it’s great if you have some experience in the chosen area, it is by no means essential as full training is provided from experienced colleagues during on the job training.

We particularly encourage applications from 16-19 year olds.

An apprenticeship is an excellent opportunity to gain experience, skills and the qualifications to progress in work life. With a wide range of options available, there will be an apprenticeship, with Aberdeenshire Council that will help start your career.

Business Administration Modern Apprenticeship

The Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration is an approved programme of training through the Aberdeenshire Council Modern Apprenticeship Scheme. The qualification is delivered as you work by a training provider using an online portfolio, there is no day release to college required.

Business Administration is a core function across all Aberdeenshire Council service areas, and so we recruit Modern Apprentices into many different teams. These may include Business Support, Finance, HR and Planning and Economy. The specific duties of each team and role will be included in the job advert.

Care Modern Apprenticeship

The Modern Apprenticeship in Care is an approved programme of training through the Aberdeenshire Council Modern Apprenticeship Scheme.  The qualification is delivered as you work by a training provider using an online portfolio and observation, there is no day release to college required.

Aberdeenshire Council provides care to the elderly and those with learning difficulties across Aberdeenshire. This can be in one of our 8 Care Homes, 6 Very Sheltered Housing complexes or to those in their own home, with our Care at Home Service. A career in care can be challenging but also extremely rewarding, providing support to those in need and helping them maintain their independence is an extremely important service we provide to our communities.

Qualification

SCQF Level 6/SVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care

Craft and Trade Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships in the craft sector, also known as trades, are approved programmes of training with Aberdeenshire Council. These are delivered by the specific industry training board as you work or as day release to college.

Our Housing team employs a wide range of apprentices in many trades, they provide on the job training contributing to the maintenance of our council buildings and fleet of council vehicles.

Qualification

The qualification for each apprenticeship is specific to the trade and will be delivered as you work and with day release to college.

Time to complete: 2 to 4 years

Career progression

Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to get hands on experiences and gain a recognised qualification, all while being paid. Our apprentices can continue into permanent employment as a qualified and experienced trades person.

Customer Service Modern Apprenticeship

The Modern Apprenticeship in Customer Service is an approved programme of training through the Aberdeenshire Council Modern Apprenticeship Scheme. The qualification is delivered as you work by a training provider using an online portfolio and observation, there is no day release to college required.

Aberdeenshire Council’s Customer Service team delivers an excellent service to the council's customers, you will receive expert training to develop your knowledge in all areas of service delivery throughout Aberdeenshire. Providing an efficient and effective first point of contact you will offer specialist advice and general information to deal with front-line queries on council services from members of the public requiring support.

Qualification

SCQF Level 6/SVQ Level 3 in Customer Service

Time to complete: Up to 12 months

Early Years Modern Apprenticeship

The Modern Apprenticeship in Early Years Childcare is an approved programme of training through the Aberdeenshire Council Modern Apprenticeship Scheme. The qualification is delivered as you work by a training provider using an online portfolio and observation, there is no day release to college required.

Aberdeenshire Council provides early learning and childcare to children aged 2-5, in many school nurseries throughout Aberdeenshire. Within these nurseries we have a range of qualified and experienced staff delivering learning activities based on a national curriculum to help children develop their skills and personalities. Working alongside these team members, you will participate in planning and carrying out these activities while providing nurturing support to our next generation of learners.

A typical day in a school nursery involves developing children’s skills with activities such as number and alphabet games, painting, cooking and outdoor activities. Reading stories and singing songs together is a great way to encourage learning for this age group. While carrying out these activities you will be assessing how the children are progressing and will report back on this. Most importantly you will ensure children are kept safe and well.

SCQF Level 7/SVQ Level 3 Social Services Children and Young People

Time to complete: Up to 24 months

ICT Modern Apprenticeship

The Modern Apprenticeship in ICT is an approved programme of training through the Aberdeenshire Council Modern Apprenticeship Scheme. The qualification is delivered as you work by a training provider using an online portfolio and observation, there is no day release to college required.

Aberdeenshire Council’s ICT Support Team provides customer focused support for all IT users across the council. This apprenticeship offers the opportunity to gain extensive experience in all aspects of IT support. The main areas of support include desktop software and hardware, systems and applications software. After training you will complete front line IT duties including phone, webchat and local site support.

Qualification

SCQF Level 7/SVQ Level 3 IT Professional

Time to complete: Up to 12 months

Leisure Modern Apprenticeships

The Modern Apprenticeship in Leisure is an approved programme of training through the Aberdeenshire Council Modern Apprenticeship scheme. The qualification is delivered as you work by a training provider using an online portfolio and observation, there is no day release to college required.

Modern Apprenticeships are designed to help you learn whilst working. You’ll gain hands on experience with your employer and work towards a qualification all while getting paid. During your apprenticeship, you will receive full training from experienced staff to enable you to complete the day to day activities required in your role.

There are over 15 leisure facilities throughout Aberdeenshire providing sport and culture opportunities for the community. Within these facilities our qualified and experienced staff deliver a wide range of sport and leisure activities. Working alongside these team members, you will play a part in the delivery of health and safety throughout the facility, assist with delivery coaching sessions and the provide quality customer service.

Part of the recruitment for this job includes a swim test.

Qualification

SCQF Level 5/SVQ Level 2 in Operational Services

Time to complete: Up to 12 months

A day in the life

A typical day in a leisure centre involves assisting customers with enquiries, ensuring the safe operation of equipment in the gyms as well as the correct use of facilities including the swimming pool. You will take part in coaching sessions while promoting all available services to the public and help with the overall day to day management of the leisure centre. Studying for your SVQ is completed and assessed as you work, there is no day release to college or exams required.

Career progression

The Modern Apprenticeship in Leisure is a fixed term role.  While you are not guaranteed a job at the end of your apprenticeship with the council, most apprentices who successfully complete their apprenticeship continue into further employment with us.
