Volunteer with the council

Volunteering can be very rewarding, by giving some of your time you can meet new people, gain new skills and experience all while supporting your community. Time spent volunteering can enhance your CV or application form to help you on your journey into a new career all while helping those who need it most.

All volunteers will be required to be enrolled through the councils volunteer policy and pre-enrolment checks.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Schools

Are you interested in supporting the next generation of adults to learn and develop? Do you have an interest in education in Aberdeenshire’s schools and have a bit of time to spare? Schools appreciate voluntary help from parents, grandparents and members of the local community.

What we are looking for

Volunteering in schools can come in many forms, like  for example helping young children with aspects of their learning. You don’t have to be a teacher in a school to make a valuable contribution. You may have useful skills or experience that schools can use to enhance learning and teaching.

There are a variety of ways you can volunteer in schools:

  • Help in the school library
  • Support pupils in the upkeep of the school garden
  • You can also be involved, under the supervision and guidance of the teacher, in supporting learning in classes with groups or individual pupils

This may include:

  • Helping young people learn to play and share in games
  • Talking to young people about what they are learning
  • Supporting young people in practising an aspect of their learning eg reading, maths, art
  • Supporting young people to use digital tools in their learning
  • Talking to young people about your job
  • Supporting lunchtime/after school activities like Young Engineer Clubs, cycle training

Support and guidance about your volunteering role and what is expected of you will be provided by the Head Teacher/class teacher.

Care homes and very sheltered housing

Volunteer in one of our care homes or very sheltered housing complexes and you can contribute towards supporting older people to improve their wellbeing and enjoy a good quality of life. There are a variety of volunteer roles available which support our staff to enable people to carry out the usual activities of daily living and enjoy activities both inside and outside the home.

What we are we looking for

There are a number of volunteering opportunities available within residential services including:

  • Care and Support
  • Gardener
  • Planned activities
  • Driver

The people we are looking for should have:

  • Good communication skills
  • Positive, reliable, supportive and caring nature
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Ability to work in a wider team

What support you will get

  • Volunteer induction training
  • Named supervisor to support you in your volunteering role
  • Access to related training
  • Opportunity to gain experience in working with older people

Rangers

Each year we support over 11,000 residents and visitors to explore our rich natural and cultural heritage. We welcome volunteers who can help us deliver environmental interpretation to schools, groups and at public events. We also welcome volunteers who would like to help us in promoting and protecting our biodiversity through site and species monitoring.

What we are looking for

The people we are looking for should be:

  • Welcoming and comfortable working with a wide range of audiences
  • Knowledgeable about Aberdeenshire’s natural and cultural heritage
  • Confident with basic species identification
  • Knowledgeable about the Scottish Outdoor Access Code
  • Content working outdoors throughout the seasons, with lone and remote working on occasion
  • Aware of the importance of maintaining confidentiality

  • Induction and ongoing support from experienced Rangers

Active Schools

The council is looking for eager and motivated volunteers to contribute to the development of projects and partnerships in a sporting and physical activity environment (incorporating sport, play, health and active travel) for young people. These exciting roles support the Active Schools team in meeting the national aims of Sportscotland.

What we are we looking for

You will be an enthusiastic, driven individual with excellent interpersonal skills who can help grasp opportunities to develop sport and physical activity within Aberdeenshire.

What you can get involved with

A number of opportunities are available to help with a range of activities across Aberdeenshire. These include:

  • Extra-curricular sports clubs

  • Holiday sports camps
  • Events management
  • Health projects

Libraries

Aberdeenshire Libraries would like you to get in touch if you have some free time to volunteer in a number of roles. The time commitment is a minimum of an hour a week.

What we are looking for

We are looking for motivated individuals with good communication and organisational skills who are able to interact with people all ages. You will also have an interest in one or more of the following areas:

  • Family History Research
  • Coding (Scratch, Python, CSS and HTML)
  • 3D printing
  • Basic ICT skills
  • Storytelling
  • Craft sessions
  • BBC Micro:Bit
  • Constructive play with LEGO
  • Research about your local area
  • Delivering books to housebound library users

What you can get involved with

We have a number of ways for you to get involved with Aberdeenshire Libraries and the specific library volunteer roles we have on offer are:

  • Code Club Library Volunteer
  • General Library Volunteer
  • ICT Volunteer
  • LEGO Library Volunteer
  • Local Studies Volunteer

What support you will get

You will be working within a branch library in Aberdeenshire under the direction of a Senior Library Assistant and will be fully supported in your role. You will receive induction training as well as any specific training required for your role. This would be an excellent opportunity for someone who is looking to work within libraries or has an interest or skill they would like to pass on to others.
