Councillors approve procurement spend to enhance sport and physical activities in Peterhead
Councillors have welcomed proposals which will see enhanced availability of sport and physical activities at the Peterhead Leisure and Community Centre.
During a meeting of the Buchan Area Committee last week, members approved a six-figure procurement plan which will enable Live Life Aberdeenshire (LLA) – the sports and culture service of Aberdeenshire Council – to extend the capacity of its community and fitness facilities.
LLA has given a commitment to improving provision at the centre over the next five years and is confident the new projects will have a positive impact on both general health and wellbeing and increased access for the local community.
Welcoming the investment, Buchan Area Committee chair, Cllr Dianne Beagrie, said: “This project will enable Live Life Aberdeenshire to develop a new portfolio of activities for all ages which will be modern and innovative.
“An improved fitness suite will ensure improved levels of fitness within our population, and also allow us to reach new markets and develop both new fitness opportunities and offer a range of community activites for Peterhead residents – including those groups which currently don’t use our facilities.”
It is the intention of LLA to deliver a new range of modern interactive and play services for children and young people which will provide more modern opportunities for toddlers through to teenagers as well as social spaces to allow for relaxation and catch-ups.
As part of the project, the centre will be saying farewell to the Amazone play facility which was installed in the1990s, but is now beyond its safe operating life.
