New Early Learning and Childcare provision in Fraserburgh
Banff and Buchan Area Committee has approved a project to create new Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) provision in Fraserburgh.
Following the committee’s decision on Tuesday, work will now begin to progress a construction project at St Andrew’s School in Fraserburgh, which will see the existing infant school building on Albert Street, refurbished to create a new nursery facility.
Anticipated to open by the summer of 2026, it will replace the current ELC provision at both Fraserburgh North School and St Andrew’s School.
During the construction phase, both nurseries will continue to operate from their current locations.
The new facilities will offer new opportunities for children and will include significant outdoor spaces, sensory space and quiet areas.
Banff and Buchan Area Committee Chair Cllr Doreen Mair said: “Aberdeenshire Council remains committed to delivering high quality ELC provision and very much retains the ambition to have modern, purpose-built facilities in Fraserburgh. This new nursery will inspire our youngsters with learning and play opportunities that they do not currently have.
“By providing both indoor and outdoor first class learning and play spaces, it will encourage the children to have active, healthy lifestyles and promote well-being beyond the classroom.
“These enhanced facilities will increase participation, allowing the children to fully engage in a wider range of activities that nurture their potential and self-confidence.
"It will also make excellent use of a much-loved Fraserburgh building and ensure its future”
There will be two classroom spaces retained within the refurbished building, which would allow for early stage working and transition between Nursery and Primary 1.
The project will be funded utilising capital grant funding supplied by the Scottish Government, as part of the 1140 expansion of funded ELC entitlement.
Banff and Buchan Area Committee vice chair Cllr Richard Menard said: "This new nursery represents a collaborative effort, ensuring that the voices and needs of parents, pupils, staff, and the wider community are respected and included.
“It will provide a safe and inclusive environment, offering high-quality learning and play spaces that meet the diverse needs of all children, including those requiring additional support.”
