According to Oxford Economics, around 16% of the UK’s total emissions come from residential housing, and so improving energy efficiency is crucial to reaching net-zero targets. More efficient homes also mitigate consumers’ exposure to climate risk. Improving energy efficiency in homes offers a buffer against higher energy costs, providing financial relief to households while supporting environmental objectives.
In Scotland, an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) score is a measure of how energy efficient a building is, ranging from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). It provides information about a building's energy use, CO2 emissions, and potential for improvement. EPCs are valid for 10 years.
It’s worth noting that England and Wales were ranked separately, with Exeter taking the top spot with an average EPC energy efficiency score of 75.6. However, Uswitch says that Scotland's data is not directly comparable with England & Wales as the two schemes use different methodologies.
