Deeside Day Opportunities

Deeside Day Opportunities provides a day service to, and helps meet the needs of, adults with a learning disability living in Deeside and surrounding areas.

We support people using the service to be as independent as possible through knowledge, improving skills and building confidence. For many people this means moving on to community based opportunities, employment, further education, social groups and more.

For people with more complex needs, our building based day service offers help with everyday skills, mobility support, sensory experiences, rebound therapy and support in areas individual to them. It runs from Scolty Day Centre, which is open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm.

Activities and opportunities

We have a range of activities and opportunities in the day service, at Scolty Day Centre, Sea View Café (Stonehaven) and in the local communities of Aboyne and Banchory. We can help you access leisure activities such as swimming, horse riding, boccia, rebound and carriage driving. We like to get out and about in the local and wider area.

We encourage independence. Many of our activities promote wellbeing, mobility, fitness, self-advocacy, confidence building, assertiveness and other social skills.

Our staff team use various communication systems to support people who have limited or no verbal communication and/or a hearing impairment. To make sure we get it right for you we work closely with external agencies, health care team and social workers so a full support package is put in place.

Our service focuses on the individual's needs. Each person has their own action plan working towards goals and outcomes no matter how big or small. We use various pictorial time tables, and pictures to help some people through the day. We evidence activities and progress through photographs made into a portfolio.

Lunch time arrangements and breaks

The Scolty Day Centre doesn't offer a lunch service. You need to bring your own packed lunch. There are tea and coffee facilities and fresh drinking water.

Referral to the service

A referral is a request for an assessment of a person's needs. You can be referred to our day service after an assessment of need and eligibility. Your Social Worker does this.

A visit to the service is arranged to decide if we can offer what you want and need. If you like what you see and have been referred to the day service, you, your carers, guardian, Social Worker and Day Service Manager agree what the placement is expected to deliver and on what days.

A member of staff is assigned as your keyworker. The keyworker makes sure:

  • your outcomes in the service are identified and an action plan created
  • an Individual Service Plan (ISP) is agreed and completed
  • everyone involved in the plan know their responsibilities
  • essential resources in the plan are available or developed
  • your agreed outcomes are regularly reviewed
  • you are involved in the planning and management of day services
  • your parents, carers, guardians and advocates are involved

Everyone using the day service has at least two reviews a year. One is a multi-agency formal review. Followed by an interim six monthly review involving you and your keyworker. A review is where you meet with all people providing your support and look at your program, your progress and your achievements and set your outcomes for the next year.

Placements are temporary and discussed at reviews. They aren't offered for life.
