Sensory rooms
We have a large sensory room at Forest View. It is equipped with:
- vibroacoustic waterbed
- LED light up ball pool
- fibre optics
- sensory wall panels with lights
- bubble tubes
- a variety of projectors
- tactile sensory equipment
Along with this, we have a smaller sensory room based in Deeside at The Neuk. Both rooms are fully adapted with ceiling tracking hoists for all to access. The sensory rooms offer a multi-sensory experience: touch, sight, smell and sound. They provide a person-centred therapeutic experience.
Ideatek and Kraftworks
Ideatek and Kraftworks are woodwork projects for adults with learning disabilities. The projects make wooden crafts, which can be personalised to individual orders. One of our big sellers are Christmas trees.
By taking part in these projects you have the opportunity to:
- meet and interact with customers
- be involved in making the orders
- deliver the finished items to the customer
- develop skills such as using tools, product packaging and customer care
There may be additional tasks at certain times of the year such as refurbishing outdoor items at Kraftworks. Tasks include:
- sanding items
- doing any maintenance needed
- painting or varnishing the item
There is also a kindling project which runs across both Ideatek and Kraftworks. The project collects wooden pallets locally. These are dismantled, chopped into kindling before being packed into net bags and sold.
Ideatek is based at Forest View. Kraftworks is Deeside based, in Aboyne.
For more information about these projects, call 01467 690543 for Ideatek and 01339 887114 for Kraftworks.
Community support
South Day Services are involved in a variety of community groups and places. These groups focus on topics such as neighbourhood improvement, social justice, and environmental conservation. Community groupwork involves working as a team to deal with common issues and achieve shared goals. Through regular meetings and co-ordinated activities, members use their skills and ideas to create positive change in their local community. Encouraging a sense of belonging, empowerment and a voice to be seen and heard in their local area.
We help Mearns and Coastal Healthy Living Network with Shopping Buddies, delivering shopping to those isolated in the community. This is also run in Deeside along with Books Have Legs, which delivers library books to those who without this service would be isolated in the community.
In Deeside, we oversee the stock of the local food pantries. Users gain numeracy skills and stock management skills, as well as making a difference in fuel poverty projects.
People using the day service enjoy helping out and find it rewarding making a difference to other people’s lives.
Our day service staff support users of the service in community groups or activities depending on their individual needs. Users are supported to be volunteers at lunch clubs and coffee mornings alongside other roles in the retail sector. This builds on skills, independence, and social aspects as well as making a difference to those who need it in the local communities.
