Autism and ADHD support

On this page you can find out more information about the autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) support available to help you.

Autism opens in a new tab is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference. It affects how people communicate and interact. Autism is often talked about as a spectrum; this doesn’t mean a linear spectrum. It can affect people in different ways. Every autistic person is different and will experience the world differently not only to non-autistic people, but also other autistic peers. Autistic people have a unique culture and communication style.

ADHD opens in a new tab affects the way people behave. People with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating and may act impulsively.

There are some autism and ADHD specialist support groups in Aberdeenshire, including third party organisations.

Adult Autism Assessment Team

Adults in Aberdeenshire can be assessed for autism. Assessments and diagnosis of autism for those 18 years and over is done by the Adult Autism Assessment Team (AAAT) opens in a new tab.

This service will cease from 31st March 2025.

Local and national support groups

Autism and Neurodiversity North East opens in a new tab provide one to one autistic and neurodivergent specific support and guidance for autistic children, adults and families throughout Aberdeenshire.

SensationALL opens in a new tab provide support and activities for neurodiverse individuals and those with complex support needs. Based in Aberdeen City, they offer in-person and virtual support sessions to those with or without a diagnosis.

Spikin Autism and More opens in a new tab Facebook peer support group for individuals and families affected by any autism spectrum condition or additional support need.

SWAN opens in a new tab (Scottish Women's Autism Network) is an autistic-led charity providing services, information and support for autistic women, girls and non-binary people. SWAN runs events and activities, both in person and online, including local meet-up groups, online peer support, pre-diagnosis drop-in sessions, post-diagnosis groups and wellbeing webinars.

Autism Alert Card

An Autism Alert Card can help autistic people let others know that they might need support in unfamiliar or emergency situations. It can be personalised. You can add information that may help someone support you while you are out.
