Technology enabled health and social care services

Technology options as alternatives to telecare

There are many technology options available to buy in shops or online that can help you stay safe and independent at home.

On this page is information about some of the options, including links to websites for more details about the technology. Some of the web pages have been designed with specific groups in mind, but the suggestions are suitable in many other situations.

You can see demonstrations of some smart home and other technology at our TEC Room in Peterhead.

Mobile phones

There are mobile phones on the market that have bigger buttons and fewer options than a standard phone. Some also have call buttons that can be customised with text or images to make them even easier to use.

Video calling devices

There are video calling devices available that have been designed to be very easy to use. Some devices allow trusted friends or family to connect automatically after a notification or countdown. These can be used to check that someone is ok and to help stay connected.

NHS Highland's guide to simple video calling devices has more information about the devices available to buy.

GPS tracker devices

Tracker devices can help people to get out and about safely with confidence. They can be used to locate someone in an emergency. GPS stands for Global Positioning System. The technology uses satellites or the mobile phone network to work out the precise location of the device. Some trackers can make emergency calls, some can do this automatically if a fall is detected.

Alzheimer Scotland's guide to GPS trackers has more information about these devices. Although written for people with dementia, the information is relevant to all.

Smart speakers

Smart speakers are devices connected to the internet that can do various tasks by voice commands. This could include:

  • setting reminders or timers
  • making calls
  • making and reading out lists
  • listening to audiobooks, programmes or music

They can also be used to control ‘smart’ equipment, for example a lamp could be controlled by voice commands using a smart plug. Some smart speakers can be controlled or display information using built-in screens. They can also be connected to buttons or sensors.

AbilityNet's website has information on how to use a smart speaker to make a home more accessible.

Other technology options

Alzheimer Scotland’s Meet ADAM website helps people find technology products matched to their needs. Although designed to support people living with dementia, the website has useful ideas for many other people who need support with living independently at home.

NHS Highland website has helpful information on a range of technology products available to buy in shops or online that can help you stay independent and safe at home.
