UK General Election 2024

A UK Parliamentary General Election will take place on Thursday, 4th July 2024 to elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to the UK Parliament. View the Notice of Election (PDF 73KB).

You can no longer register to vote or apply for a postal vote for this election.

Key dates

Deadlines for this election:

  • Register to vote: 11:59pm on 18th June 2024
  • Apply for a postal vote: 5pm on 19th June 2024
  • Apply for a proxy vote: 5pm on 26th June 2024
  • Apply for voter ID (Voter Authority Certificate): 5pm on 26th June 2024

Poll cards and postal votes:

  • First issue of poll cards and letters handed to Royal Mail: 10th or 11th June 2024
  • First issue of postal votes handed to Royal Mail: 18th or 19th June 2024
  • All postal votes delivered by: 28th June 2024

Voter ID requirement

When voting in UK general elections you will need to show photo ID at your polling station.

If you don't have an accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate is 5pm on Wednesday, 26th June 2024. Find out more about the voter ID requirement.

You can get voter ID information in other formats from the Electoral Commission including audio, braille, BSL, easy read and plain text.
